Aristotle's poetics

Aristotle's poetics

Hello everyone, This is a blog assigned by Dilip sir Barad. Here in this blog I will try to answers few questions which has given.

1. Have you studied any tragedies during B.A programme? who was the tragic protagonists in those tragedies ? What was their hamartia?

In B.A I have studied a well known tragedy untitled " king Lear". Which is written   " William Shakespeare". Below some basic information about this tragedy.

"King Lear " is one of the Shakespeare's famous tragedy. In this we can see ,

King Lear devides his kingdom among the two daughters who flatter him and banishes the third one who loves him. His eldest daughters both then reject him at their homes, so Lear goes mad and wanders through a storm. At the end he died.

Themes of king lear

Power,

Justice,

Self-knowledge ,

Old age ,

Blindness of insight, etc.

Character of king lear
Albany , Cordelia , Edgar ,Edmund ,Goneril , Kent , king Lear .

The tragic hero of this play is king Lear. King lear's  'hamartia' is his pride and luck of understanding and judging the true intentions of his daughter. He blindly believes on just what is saw. The few of judgement sets of a horrible chain of events that lead his tragedy.

2.  Did the "plot" of These tragedies follow necessary rules and regulations proposed by Aristotle?

There are some rules which given by Aristotle for real tragedy. In literature many playwrights sticks to these this rules and regulations put forward by Aristotle. William Shakespeare was not bounded by this rules. Here I have try to write some which shows that how Shakespeare has follow some rules and some ignores.

Tragic hero

According to Aristotle the hero of tragedy should be center of story. And also hero must belongs to royal family. Here in king Lear we can see that king is in center of whole story and also from royal community. So Shakespeare possess this rules and became part of Aristotle tragedy.

Morality

Aristotle believes that tragedies should followed by 'virtue will rewarded and vice will punish'.

Shakespeare challenges this consept by portraying a world filled with deception, betrayal and suffering.

Unity of time and place :

Aristotle believes that tragedies should have single location, take place within a day. But in this tragedy Shakespeare break this rule  with portraying many locations.

Catharsis :

According to Aristotle tragedy should produre a catharsis in the audience. Shakespeare has also possess this rule with write such tragic, pity protagonist.

 Unity of action :

Aristotle believes that tragedies should focused on one main plot and subplot should be ignored. By in present tragedy Shakespeare also challenges this rule with discuss many actions on same time as subplot.

To sum up , Shakespeare has follow some rules but some has ignored.
