What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s words, ideas, research, images, or creative work without giving proper credit to the original author. It means presenting another person’s intellectual work as your own. Plagiarism is considered a serious violation of academic integrity because it involves dishonesty and misrepresentation.

In academic writing, students and researchers are expected to produce original work. When they use information from books, articles, websites, or other sources, they must acknowledge the source through proper citation and referencing. Failing to do so results in plagiarism.

Plagiarism can occur intentionally, when a person deliberately copies someone else's work, or unintentionally, when someone forgets to cite a source or does not understand proper referencing rules. However, both forms are treated seriously in academic institutions.

Forms (Types) of Plagiarism

Plagiarism can take different forms. Some of the major types are:

1. Direct Plagiarism

This occurs when a person copies text word-for-word from a source without quotation marks or citation. It is the most obvious and serious form of plagiarism.

2. Self-Plagiarism

Self-plagiarism happens when a student reuses their own previously submitted work without permission or proper acknowledgment. Even though the work is their own, submitting it again as new work is considered dishonest.

3. Paraphrasing Plagiarism

This occurs when someone rewrites another person’s ideas in slightly different words but does not give credit to the original author. Even if the wording is changed, the idea still belongs to someone else and must be cited.

4. Mosaic (Patchwork) Plagiarism

In this type, a person copies phrases from different sources and combines them into one paragraph without proper citation. It is also called patchwriting.

5. Accidental (Unintentional) Plagiarism

This happens when a student forgets to cite sources, makes mistakes in referencing, or does not understand citation rules. Even though it may not be intentional, it is still considered plagiarism.

6. Source-Based Plagiarism

This involves giving incorrect information about a source, using fake references, or citing a source that was not actually consulted.
